Best Time to Visit Patagonia for Hiking, Month by Month

Every month rated for hikers on wind, daylight and crowds, with the real opening dates of the W Trek, the O Circuit and each Torres del Paine refugio.

Hero Image

The short answer is December to February. These are Patagonia's warmest months and its longest days, with about 16½ hours from sunrise to sunset in Torres del Paine at the end of December. They are also the windiest and the busiest months, and the short answer leaves that out.

This guide sets out the best time to visit Torres del Paine and El Chaltén for hikers, month by month. It uses weather normals from the Chilean and Argentine met services, CONAF's park rules and the dates each refugio opens its beds. We run the W Trek from Puerto Natales and the O Circuit from Punta Arenas, so our own departure dates are here too.

The table shows daylight in the park on the 15th of each month, Puerto Natales temperature normals (DMC, 1991-2020) and strong-wind days at El Calafate (SMN, 2011-2020). Trail status comes from CONAF and the refugio operators for 2025-26 and 2026.

El Calafate's airport sits on the steppe east of the Andes. Read the wind column as a pattern, not a forecast for a pass. The wind builds from September to a December peak and falls to its lowest in May.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Patagonia for Hiking?

The best time to hike Patagonia depends on the trek and on what you will trade. For a first W Trek with every refugio open, aim for late November or the first half of March. Los Cuernos, the refugio in the middle of the W, opened only from 1 November to 30 March in 2025-26.

A walker leaning into a gust on a Patagonian lakeshore; midsummer brings the most strong-wind days

The best time to go to Patagonia for calm days is not midsummer. El Calafate averages 21.6 strong-wind days in December and 14.2 in March, so March gives the same trails with a third fewer windy days.

For the O Circuit, January to mid-March is the safest window. In 2026 the self-guided season ran from 1 January until CONAF closed the circuit for snow and ice on 26 March.

April suits autumn colour and quiet trails if you accept frost and 10½ hours of daylight. The calmest months are May to August, when the W can only be walked with a guide.

Spring in Patagonia: September to November

Daylight in the park grows from 11½ to 15½ hours across spring, and the wind builds month by month, from 11.9 strong-wind days at El Calafate in September to 20.1 in November. CONAF keeps the O closed until at least 1 November.

Patagonia in September

CONAF's summer season officially starts on 1 September, but the trails decide the date. In 2026 the guide rule on the W and Base Torres ran until 15 September, and from 16 September hikers could walk them alone, with microspikes and poles still required where snow remained.

Few beds are open yet. Las Torres opened its Central and Francés campsites on 15 September in 2025, but its refugios waited until 1 October. Puerto Natales averages 12.2 °C by day and -0.5 °C at night.

Across the border, Los Glaciares makes registration compulsory on every trail from May to September, so El Chaltén's day hikes still start at the visitor centre. Chile's Fiestas Patrias holidays fall on 18 and 19 September.

Patagonia in October

October is when the W opens properly. Las Torres opened Central, Chileno and its hotel on 1 October in 2025, Vertice runs Dickson and Los Perros from October to April, and the park gates move to summer hours of 07:00 to 21:00.

Los Cuernos stays shut until November, so an October W sleeps at the Francés domes instead. The O stays closed too. Daylight reaches 13½ hours, and Puerto Natales averages 14 °C by day.

Prices drop at the edges of the season. Las Torres charges about 13% less for a refugio bed in October and April than from November to March, and its pitches for your own tent cost 20% less in the same months.

Patagonia in November

November opens the whole park. Los Cuernos and Serón opened on 1 November in 2025, so every W refugio is running, and the O is due to reopen from 1 November 2026 if CONAF's weather and safety assessment allows it.

The pass explains the O's new rules. On 17 November 2025 five hikers died in a storm between Los Perros and Paso John Gardner. CONAF's reopening plan of December 2025 capped the O at 100 walkers a day, made it one-way and required registration at Guardería Coirón.

Wind is close to its peak, with 20.1 strong-wind days at El Calafate, and daylight reaches 15½ hours. Puerto Natales averages 15.6 °C by day and 2 °C at night.

Summer in Patagonia: December to February

Summer has the longest days, about 16½ hours from sunrise to sunset at the solstice, not the 18 often quoted. It is the warmest season too, with highs of 17 to 19 °C at Puerto Natales, and December and January brought a third of the park's 2024 visits.

Patagonia in December

December is the windiest month in the SMN normals. El Calafate's airport averages 24.4 km/h of wind and 21.6 strong-wind days, more than any other month. The strongest daily wind measured there in a December of 2011-2020 was 107 km/h.

A hiker facing Fitz Roy under a lens-shaped cloud; El Calafate averages 21.6 strong-wind days in December

It is busy. Torres del Paine had 60,181 visits in December 2024, and holiday full board at Las Torres costs about 36% more over Christmas and New Year. In 2026 schools in most Chilean regions end the year on 4 December.

How cold is it? Puerto Natales averages 17.2 °C by day and 3.8 °C at night, so refugio mornings start cold. Our self-guided W Trek departs daily from 1 December.

Patagonia in January

January is the busiest and warmest month. Torres del Paine had 61,027 visits in January 2024, the most of any month, and Puerto Natales averages 18.8 °C by day. With 16 hours of daylight, an early start on Base Torres costs you nothing.

The O's 2026 self-guided season opened on 1 January, and our O Circuit departures run daily from 13 January to 13 April 2027. Wind eases slightly from December, to 20.1 strong-wind days.

Book flights early. Puerto Natales airport opens only from Friday to Sunday in January 2027 because of runway works, so most hikers fly into Punta Arenas and take the 3 h 15 min bus north.

Patagonia in February

February keeps summer's long days and loses some of its wind. El Calafate's strong-wind days fall to 14.3, from 20.1 in January, and daylight still runs past 14 hours.

It is a strong month for the O. Dickson and Los Perros, the campsites on its back side, are open, and in 2026 the circuit stayed in its self-guided season until 26 March.

In Argentina, Carnival falls on 8 and 9 February 2027, a long weekend for Argentine travellers. Puerto Natales averages 18.1 °C by day and 4.2 °C at night.

Autumn in Patagonia: March and April

Argentina's park service describes Los Glaciares in autumn as yellows, ochres and reds. The wind eases as the leaves turn: El Calafate's strong-wind days fall from 14.2 in March to 10.5 in April, while frost days rise from 3.3 to 11.8.

Patagonia in March

March keeps summer's daytime warmth with less wind. Puerto Natales still averages 18.1 °C by day, the same as February, and El Calafate's strong-wind days are a third below December's.

The season starts to close. Plan an O for the first half of March: in 2026 CONAF ended the circuit's summer season early on 26 March because of compacted snow and ice. Los Cuernos and Serón closed on 30 March in 2025-26.

Easter Sunday falls on 28 March 2027, a holiday weekend in both countries. Our last W Trek departure of the season is 12 March, with 12½ hours of daylight on the trail.

Patagonia in April

April is for colour and space. Hikers who timed it report a peak in El Chaltén's beech woods around the turn of March into April, though the week moves from year to year. Las Torres charges about 13% less for refugio beds than in summer, and Paine Grande and Grey stay open after the Las Torres sites close.

It is also the month when services close. Las Torres closed Central and Chileno on 25 April in 2025-26 and Francés on 27 April, with Los Cuernos already shut. In 2026 CONAF brought its winter rules forward to 27 April.

Days shorten to 10½ hours, and Puerto Natales averages 14.3 °C by day and -0.3 °C at night. El Calafate counts 11.8 frost days in April, so pack for ice on the morning trail.

Winter in Patagonia: May to August

Torres del Paine stays open all year, but CONAF's winter rules apply from 1 May to the end of August. The W and Base Torres trails need an accredited guide, and the O stays closed until at least November. In 2026 the rules started on 27 April and lasted to 15 September.

In June and July 2026 CONAF closed the W outright because the concessionaire paused its services, and it stopped hiker crossings on the Pehoé and Grey boats. Only Base Torres stayed open, with a guide. Vertice lists its Paine Grande and Grey refugios as open all year, but that did not keep the W open in 2026.

A photographer on snow above El Chaltén at sunrise on Fitz Roy; winter trails need crampons and poles

Winter is the calmest season. El Calafate averages 11.8 km/h of wind in May, less than half of December's 24.4 km/h. The cost is cold and dark: Puerto Natales averages -4 °C at night in June and July, and the shortest day lasts 7 hours 55 minutes.

El Chaltén's trails stay walkable with crampons and trekking poles, which the park's winter notices make compulsory, and with registration at the visitor centre. Argentina's park service warns that heavy snowfall from May to October limits access to some trails.

When the W Trek and O Circuit Are Open

A full W, with a bed at every stop, is possible from 1 November to 30 March, the season Los Cuernos kept in 2025-26. In October and April the W still works with the Francés domes in place of Los Cuernos.

Icebergs on a glacier lake in Torres del Paine; the Grey III boat's 2026-27 season runs October to April

The O has the narrower window. It opens from 1 November at the earliest, only after CONAF checks the weather and the trail, and in 2026 it closed on 26 March. Vertice opens Dickson and Los Perros, the camps on its back side, from October to April, weather permitting.

Paine Grande and Grey, on the W's western arm, are the two refugios listed as open all year. Every other bed on both treks closes for the winter, so outside October to April the O is shut and the W is possible only on a guided winter trip.

  • W Trek dates: daily departures from 1 December 2026 to 12 March 2027

  • W Trek route: 7 days from Puerto Natales, 67 km on four walking days

  • O Circuit dates: daily departures from 13 January to 13 April 2027

  • O Circuit route: 10 days from Punta Arenas, 135 km on seven walking days

Both trips are self-guided and priced the same on every date, with the refugio nights booked for you. The O Circuit tour page has its day-by-day plan.

Chile or Argentina: How the Seasons Differ

The two sides share the same westerly winds but plan differently. Torres del Paine's multi-day treks sleep in refugios and campsites run by Las Torres and Vertice, so you fix your dates months ahead. Then you walk in whatever weather the week brings, from calm sun to a day of rain on the pass.

El Chaltén's day hikes start in the village and need no bed on the trail, so you can wait in town for the calm, clear day the forecast shows. The park's campsites at Poincenot, De Agostini and Capri must now be booked and paid in advance.

A hiker crossing open steppe towards Fitz Roy near El Chaltén, where the main day hikes leave the village

Rain differs too. El Calafate, on the dry steppe, gets little rain: it averages 161 mm a year in the SMN climate normals, while CONAF puts the steppe inside Torres del Paine at up to 400 mm. Argentina's park service advises visiting Los Glaciares from September to April.

Before You Book Your Dates

Book the beds before the flights. Refugio bookings for a season usually open between April and June, and the summer months fill first, so book a December trip as soon as bookings open.

In the weeks before you travel, check CONAF's park page. It posts trail closures, the winter guide rule and the status of the O, and its notices overrule any plan made months ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mild by day and cold at night. Puerto Natales, the nearest town with official records, averages 17.2 °C by day and 3.8 °C at night in December (DMC, 1991-2020). December is also the windiest month at El Calafate, with 21.6 strong-wind days, so the wind makes it feel colder on open ground.

From May to August. El Calafate's airport records a mean wind of 11.7 to 13.6 km/h in those months, about half of December's 24.4 km/h. Within the hiking season, March and April are the calmer months, with 14.2 and 10.5 strong-wind days against 21.6 in December.

Only with an accredited guide. From May to the end of August CONAF requires a guide on the W and Base Torres trails, and in 2026 the rule ran from 27 April to 15 September. In June and July 2026 the W closed completely, and only Base Torres stayed open, with a guide.

As early as you can for December to February. Bookings for a season usually open between April and June, and Las Torres and Vertice sell their beds separately. Our W Trek includes four nights in refugios and camps on the trail, so those beds are booked for you.

No: the highest point on either of our treks is Paso John Gardner on the O Circuit, at about 1,200 m. The NHS says altitude sickness usually starts above 2,500 m. In Patagonia the real hazards are wind, cold and long days on foot.

The prime season for hut-to-hut hiking in Patagonia is during the Southern Hemisphere's warmer months, generally from October to April. This period offers milder temperatures, longer daylight hours, and reduced precipitation, making it the ideal time for exploring Patagonia's trails and enjoying its breathtaking landscapes.

We've rated our tours on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the easiest and 5 being the most difficult.

The difficulty level of a tour tells you how fit you need to be and how much hiking is involved. Most of our tours are appropriate for people who are regularly active and can hike for about five to seven hours per day.

Technical difficulty means how skilled you need to be to hike on the path. Level 1 means the trail is smooth and wide (like a gravel road), while 5 means the surface is uneven and exposed, and you have to use your hands to help yourself move forward. In practice, that means that the higher the level, the more surefooted and skilled in scrambling you need to be.

It is best to book your tour early because most accommodations along the trail fill up quickly. That way, you can ensure that you have a place to stay.
